The Sales Illusion · Finding 01 of 16

Do sales reps accurately assess their own performance?

Finding
No. 76% of sales professionals rate their own execution quality higher than their manager does. 23% rate themselves lower than their manager does. Fewer than 1% are accurately calibrated with their manager. Self-assessment alone is not a liable input into enablement planning.

What it means for revenue leaders

Three quarters of a sales team rate themselves higher than their manager does. Self-assessment is stillvaluable but only paired with manager scoring, because the gap between the two scores is thediagnostic, not either score in isolation.

If an enablement plan is built from rep self-reports alone, it is built on the more optimistic of two availableinputs. If it is built from manager reports alone, the rep never sees where their own view diverges, whichis the thing that changes behaviour.

How this was measured

Sales professionals and their direct managers independently scored the same role-specific competencies on a 1–7 scale, normalised to a 0–100 composite index. Perception gap = self score minus manager score. Conducted quarterly as part of each organisation's enablement process.
